## Buying Guide: Film Format, Portability, and Budget

Choosing the right instant camera under $100 comes down to three main decisions. Here is what you need to think about before you click buy.

### Which Film Format Should You Choose?

The biggest difference between these cameras is the film they use. You have three options: Polaroid I-Type, Polaroid Go, and Instax Mini.

Polaroid I-Type produces the classic 4.2 x 3.5 inch square print. It is the largest and most iconic. The [Polaroid Now 3rd Generation](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DTTMYBRH?tag=gadgetgd-20) and the [Polaroid Now I-Type](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T1RNYP?tag=gadgetgd-20) both use it.

The trade-off is that the film is more expensive per shot, and the cameras are bulkier.

Instax Mini film is the most popular format worldwide. It produces a credit-card-size print (2.1 x 3.4 inches). The [Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 Bundle](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXMJDJWF?tag=gadgetgd-20) and the [Instax Mini 41](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F2V7RKXH?tag=gadgetgd-20) use it.

The film is cheaper and widely available in stores. The cameras are smaller and lighter.

Polaroid Go film is the smallest format at 2.6 x 2.1 inches. The [Polaroid Go Generation 2](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CG7GHYXJ?tag=gadgetgd-20) uses it. It is the most portable option, but the print size limits detail.

Film is cheaper than I-Type but more expensive than Instax Mini.

### How Important Is Portability to You?

If you plan to carry the camera everywhere, size matters a lot. The Polaroid Go Gen 2 is the most pocketable. The Instax Mini 12 and Mini 41 are small enough for a bag or large coat pocket.

The Polaroid Now cameras are larger and need a dedicated bag or case.

Consider where you will use the camera most. For parties and events, a larger camera is fine. For travel, hiking, or concerts, the compact models are better.

### What Is Your Budget for Film Over Time?

The camera cost is just the beginning. Film is a recurring expense. Instax Mini film is the most affordable, typically costing less per shot than Polaroid film.

The 50-sheet bundle with the [Instax Mini 12](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXMJDJWF?tag=gadgetgd-20) gives you the best value upfront.

Polaroid I-Type film costs more per print. If you shoot frequently, the ongoing cost adds up. The Polaroid Go film sits in the middle.

Factor in these costs when choosing your camera.

## Who Should NOT Buy Best Instant Camera under $100

These instant cameras are the wrong purchase for three kinds of buyers. Here is who they are, and what to look at instead.

### You Need Digital Photos for Social Media

If you want to share photos online instantly, an instant camera is a hassle. You have to take a physical print, scan it, or use a phone camera to capture the print. The quality degrades.

Instead, look at a digital camera with WiFi or Bluetooth. You can take photos and transfer them to your phone wirelessly. Our guide on [wireless mirrorless cameras](https://gadgetguides.org/mirrorless-camera-with-wifi/) has great options for sharing on the go.

### You Want Professional-Grade Print Quality

Instant cameras use a chemical development process that produces a distinct, retro look. The colors are not accurate, the sharpness is limited, and the prints are small. If you want high-quality prints for framing or display, an instant camera will disappoint.

Instead, consider a proper digital camera and a photo printer. Or use a professional printing service. The prints will be sharper, larger, and more color-accurate.

### You Need to Shoot a Lot Without Spending a Fortune

The per-shot cost of instant film is high. Even Instax Mini film, which is the cheapest, costs around $0.60 to $0.80 per print. If you shoot 100 frames, you are spending a significant amount on film alone.

Instead, a digital camera lets you shoot unlimited photos for free. You can then print only the best ones. For a great starting point, check out our [budget mirrorless camera guide](https://gadgetguides.org/best-budget-mirrorless-camera/).

## Final Verdict

The [Polaroid Now 3rd Generation I-Type Instant Camera + Film Bundle](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DTTMYBRH?tag=gadgetgd-20) is the best overall pick because it includes film in the box, offers autofocus and double exposure, and produces the classic Polaroid print size. It is the most complete starter package.

Want a higher owner rating and more film for less money per shot? The [Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 Bundle](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXMJDJWF?tag=gadgetgd-20) is the top choice for families and parties with its 50-sheet pack and simple operation.

Need a pocket-sized camera for travel? The [Polaroid Go Generation 2](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CG7GHYXJ?tag=gadgetgd-20) is the most portable option. On a tight budget?

The [Polaroid Now I-Type Renewed](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T1RNYP?tag=gadgetgd-20) saves you money if you already have film.

If none of these fit your needs, scroll back up to the Who Should NOT Buy section. It might save you from buying the wrong tool.
