Your RV is leaning, the control panel is blinking, and the jacks won't move. That's where Power Gear Leveling System Troubleshooting starts for most owners. It looks overwhelming.

It's not. Most failures come from the same handful of causes.

Manufacturer specs show the hydraulic pump needs at least 12.0 volts while under load. A 30 to 50 amp inline fuse protects the circuit. Low voltage causes about half of all "system dead" complaints.

As of 2026, the diagnostic process hasn't changed much. Learn these basics and you're most of the way to a fix.

A dead control panel doesn't mean a dead control panel. It usually means the pump never got power. The hydraulic pump motor needs three things: power, ground, and a signal.

Work through the system in that order.

Start with the battery. Put a multimeter on the terminals at the pump. Press the Auto Level button while you watch the reading.

If it drops below 12.0 volts, the battery is too weak. That's true even if it showed 12.6 volts at rest. Low voltage under load is one of the most common false alarms.

Next, find the inline fuse on the positive cable near the pump. It's usually a 30 to 50 amp fuse with a rubber boot. If it's blown, don't just swap it.

The pump draws heavy current. A short in the harness can pop it again. Look for chafed wires before you button things up.

Check the ground stud. A rusty frame ground causes voltage drops that make the panel act insane. Remove the bolt.

Wire brush the area. Re-torque it. A five-minute ground cleanup fixes more phantom problems than any new part.

If power, ground, and fuse are good, test the solenoid signal. Press retract. You should hear a solid click from the valve bank.

No click means the control panel isn't sending the signal. The wiring diagram stamped on the pump cover shows which terminal carries what.

Jacks Are Stuck Down (Retract Failures)

A stuck jack ruins your morning fast. Start by figuring out whether it's one jack or all of them. The fix depends on that answer.

If every jack is stuck down, the pump isn't building pressure. Check voltage and the fuse path from the previous section. Then check the fluid level.

The reservoir has a dipstick built into the cap. Low fluid means the pump can't push enough pressure to lift the RV. Top it off with the fluid type listed on the reservoir label.

Most Power Gear systems use ATF or a manufacturer-specified fluid.

If one jack stays down, you're likely dealing with a stuck solenoid valve. The solenoid bank sits on the pump unit. It directs hydraulic fluid to each jack.

With the battery fully charged, press retract and lightly tap the top of the stuck valve with a wrench. A gentle tap can free a sticky valve. If it moves, the solenoid is wearing out.

Replace it soon.

If a couple of jacks move slowly, you might have air in the system. Cycle all jacks up and down in manual mode several times. That pushes air back into the reservoir.

You'll hear a bubbly sound at first, then smooth operation.

Manual override procedure:

  1. Chock the wheels and place jack stands before going underneath.
  2. Locate the manual release valve on the solenoid bank. It takes an Allen key.
  3. Turn it counterclockwise about half a turn.
  4. The jack retracts from the RV's own weight.
  5. Re-tighten once the jack is fully stowed.

This is a safety valve, not a repair. A jack that keeps sticking needs a solenoid replacement. Never work under a supported RV without jack stands.

Hydraulic systems can fail without warning.

Mistakes That Waste Your Time (And Can Damage the System)

Power Gear troubleshooting punishes guessers. Here are the mistakes that keep showing up in service reports.

Replacing the control panel first. The panel fails, but not as often as the pump-side parts. Test voltage, fuse, and solenoids before you spend $300 on a new touchpad.

The panel is the last stop, not the first.

Running the pump on low voltage. This burns out the pump motor faster than anything else. If you hear a weak, labored hum, stop and charge the battery.

Letting it strain for even a minute can cost you a full pump replacement.

Adding fluid when the system is already full. Weak jacks are usually air or pressure issues, not low fluid. Check the dipstick before you pour anything.

Overfilling pushes fluid out the vent.

Using the wrong fluid. Power Gear systems are designed for ATF or manufacturer-specified hydraulic fluid. Don't mix incompatible fluids.

They can swell seals, cause internal leaks, and turn a simple fix into a full reseal job.

Forgetting the manual release valve position. If someone left it loose, the jack will drift or refuse to hold. Always check this before assuming a bad cylinder.

It takes seconds and costs nothing.

Skipping the ground check. Corroded grounds are a top cause of phantom electrical issues. A quick wire brushing can save you a season of headaches.

When to Call a Pro (And What to Tell Them)

Not every repair is a driveway job. Internal cylinder seal failure is the big one. If a jack slowly sinks after leveling, the fluid is bypassing inside the cylinder.

That's a shop repair. The cylinder needs to come out and get rebuilt.

Also call a pro if the pump motor sounds weak even with fully charged batteries. That usually means worn brushes or a failing motor. Repeatedly blown fuses point to a wiring short.

Let a technician trace the harness. Leaks or a burning smell are hard stop signals. Pull the fuse.

Stop using the system.
